Chapter 25

“Michael! Vanessa! We’ve got problems!”

Ava’s voice yanked me from sleep. Vanessa was curled against my chest, her tail draped across my legs. The light painted everything in warm gold, making her crimson hair shimmer. She was waking up too, blinking rapidly with an adorably confused look.

“How bad is it?” I asked, already reaching for my inventory. The new armor materialized around me, primeval bone plates settling into place with satisfying clicks. I took a moment to check its stats.

Helm: +4 Defense, +50% Darkvision

Chestplate: +5 Defense. Double Jump.

Vambraces: +3 Defense, +20% melee damage

Greaves: +2 Defense, Double Jump

Set Bonus: Grappling Hook becomes a skeletal hand, able to grab onto objects and monsters and pull them closer, as well as normal uses. Double jump from chest and greaves stack.

I want to test the double jump, but didn’t want to slam my head into the ceiling. Ava was responding anyway, drawing my attention back to the immediate problem. “I woke up you up with time to get ready,” she said, sounding slightly on edge but not yet panicked. “But don’t dawdle. These turrets are running low, and our visitors brought friends.”

Vanessa stretched, giving me an eyeful before whipping her legs out of bed. Her gorgon scale armor materialized around her. “The best part of waking up - mortal combat.”

“It certainly does wonders on getting the blood flowing,” I said, pulling my new sword from my inventory. Dragon bone formed the core of the blade, and it curved wickedly, nearly as long as my arm.

Releases a line of flame when swung with intent. Flames will originate from the back of the target if there is an impact.

“True enough.” Vanessa’s own blade materialized in her grip, bone fragments already gathering around its edge. “You look excited.”

“I have a sword that shoots fire. This is going to be a blast.”

“As cute as it is to listen to you two admire my handiwork, not quite the urgency I had in mind” Ava said. “We’ve got some new things that are taking turret fire pretty well.”

She wasn’t wrong. Through the window, I could see standard zombies shambling towards our defenses. The turrets handled them, each burst of bolts hitting vital points that dropped undead warriors like puppets with cut strings. But behind that first wave...

“Well,” I said, watching something gigantic emerge from the tree line. “That’s new.”

The creature stood twice as tall as a normal zombie, its form cobbled together from multiple corpses. Arms sprouted from its torso in impossible configurations, each one ending in weapons that hadn’t seen proper combat in who knew how long. Three heads stared in different directions, allowing it to track multiple targets at once. More of its kind followed, their shambling gait belying dangerous speed.

And between the different bodies were strands of glowing threads.

One of the amalgamations reached a turret tower before the automated defenses could drop it. Its weapons struck stone with terrible force, sending our defensive position crashing down in a shower of blocks and bolts. The creature pressed forward, already seeking its next target.
